Perhaps check the return value of your system calls?
int system(const char *command);

I wonder if you shouldn't modify the letter "a" so that it is more like "a" rather than "a". Otherwise, the style of the logotype almost makes it look like a sloppily written "u".

If you actually want a usable Newton, go for a 2000/2100 or an eMate with OS 2.1. This one is a collectible so shouldn't really be used anyway to keep it from further wear and tear to maintain its value.

I was wondering if there is anyway around this without changing anything like the software.

Yes for each inbox you have, select it and issue form the menu Mailbox->Rebuild
You should rebuild mailboxes every so often. Especially after you have deleted a bunch of messages.

Samsung's new "Super" AMOLED are actually somewhat visible outside. They are an improvement in that respect. Besides that, it will have inferior color reproduction and (IMO) over-saturated colors.
